Sagrada de la Famila

If you ever come to Barcelona you have got to visit Antoni Gaudi's Sagrada Familia. Gary and I had decided that we had seen enough churches to last a lifetime in the past two years but after speaking with a few people who quietly encouraged us to visit just one more, we went yesterday. 
This is not just a church! This is one man's life ambition....that has lasted far beyond his life. It has been under construction for more than 130 years- every generation has found artists to fill the places of the men who have gone before them. It's a phenomenal effort, a profound display of one man's faith. The basilica is also called the people's temple because it started as a local project through funds raised almost entirely by the community. It still supports itself with donations and funds from its gift shops. The neighborhood was built around the cathedral and developed by Antoni Gaudi to bring more life to the building. He positioned a park directly in the front and back and then drew the streets to flow out in the shape of a four point star so that no others buildings would disturb the view.
